Booking a professional photoshoot for your dog is exciting, but if you’ve never done it before, it’s completely normal to have lots of questions.
I’ve found that most dog owners have similar questions to ask before they book. The good news is that the answer is almost always, “Don’t worry – we’ve got this covered!”
So, whether you’re thinking about celebrating a new puppy, capturing your family dog’s unique personality, or creating beautiful portraits you’ll treasure forever of an older dog, here are the answers to the questions I’m asked most often.
1. My dog won’t sit still. Can you still photograph them?
Absolutely! In fact, most dogs don’t sit still for very long, and I would never expect them to.
A great dog photoshoot isn’t about perfect obedience. It’s about capturing your dog’s personality.
Some dogs love to pose, while others prefer to explore, sniff everything in sight or bounce around the studio. That’s all part of who they are, and those little quirks often create the most memorable photographs. The session is relaxed, patient and completely tailored to your dog. And if I have to use a bucket-load of treats to get them to stay still for half a second, then that’s what will happen!
2. Does my dog need to know any tricks?
Not at all. It does make my life easier if your dig knows the basic sit, stay and lie down, but if they are a ball of energy then we can work with that, too.
Whether your dog has perfect recall or thinks every command is meant for someone else, beautiful photographs are still possible.
Simple commands like “sit” or “wait” can be helpful, but they’re certainly not essential. Even if we need to keep a lead on your dog, I can edit this out and you will never know when you look at the finished photos.
With plenty of patience, encouragement, lots of treats and a little bit of experience, we’ll create images you’ll love regardless of your dog’s training.
3. My dog is nervous around new people. Is that a problem?
That’s OK too! Every dog has their own personality, and some simply take a little longer to settle than others.
The session is always led at your dog’s pace. There is no rushing, no pressure and no expectation for them to perform. We spend the first 5-10 mins chatting while your dog gets used to the space and to me.
Many nervous dogs surprise their owners once they realise they’re somewhere safe, calm and full of treats!
If your dog has any particular anxieties or needs, simply let me know beforehand so I can make the experience as comfortable as possible.
4. Can I be in some of the photographs too?
Yes! Although many people book a session just for their dog, you’re very welcome to be part of the photographs if you’d like to. This works really well if your pup is more nervous, as you can help to calm them.
You don’t need to worry about posing or being the centre of attention. Some of my favourite images are simply of you sharing a cuddle, a look or a quiet moment together.
Years from now, those photographs often become the most treasured of all.
5. How long does a studio dog photoshoot take?
Every dog is different, so there isn’t a strict timeline. Some dogs settle almost immediately, while others need a little longer to explore their surroundings before I pick up my camera.
The important thing is that we work at your dog’s pace rather than watching the clock.
There’s plenty of time for breaks, treats, cuddles and sniffs. A happy, relaxed dog always creates the best photographs.
6. What should I bring?
The essentials are simple:
- Your dog’s favourite treats (lots!)
- A favourite toy (if they have one)
- A lead and collar or harness
- Anything that helps them feel relaxed
If there’s a special blanket, toy, bandana or accessory you’d like included in a few images, feel free to bring that along too.
7. Can you photograph puppies?
Absolutely, and they’re some of my favourite sessions, and what I’m increasingly becoming known for!

8. My dog is getting older. Is it too late for a photoshoot?
It’s never too late. Never.
Senior dogs deserve to be included just as much as puppies. In fact, when they have been a steady member of your household for years, they should be celebrated more.
In fact, many owners tell me afterwards that they only wish they’d booked sooner, to capture their younger, more playful years.
Older dogs often have the calmest expressions and the gentlest personalities, creating beautifully timeless portraits.
Sessions are adapted to suit your dog’s comfort, with plenty of breaks whenever needed.
