WHY HAVE A CAKE SMASH PHOTOSHOOT?
When your baby reaches their first birthday, what better way to celebrate than a cake smash and splash session?! A cake smash photoshoot is a fun, playful way to mark your little one’s first birthday — and a perfect chance to capture their curiosity, cheeky smiles, and messy moments in beautiful, professional portraits.
The beauty of a session like this is it allows your baby’s character to shine through as the whole photo shoot is about their enjoyment of the session. The only posed bit is at the very start, when I take nice clean birthday portraits before the cake comes out.
My cake smash sessions take place in my cosy Nottingham studio and are designed to be stress-free, safe, and full of fun. Whether your baby dives right in or just delicately pokes at the icing, I’ll be there to capture every detail.
What’s Included in a Cake Smash Session?
Each cake smash session includes three parts to tell the full story of your baby’s milestone:
1. Portraits Before the Cake – We’ll start with some clean, classic images of your baby on a neutral backdrop. These make beautiful pieces to display on your wall. Parents and siblings can be included in a couple of these too!
2. The Cake Smash – Then it’s time to bring out the cake! We’ll let your baby explore, squish, and taste at their own pace while I capture the fun.
3. Splash in the Tub – Finish with a warm bubble bath in my little tub — it’s a great way to clean up and I’ll capture a few more adorable photos while your baby plays.
My photography studio is based in Nottingham, with free on-site parking and easy access from West Bridgford, Beeston, Arnold and surrounding areas. The space is designed to be baby-friendly, warm and welcoming, with plenty of time built into each session for cuddles, settling in, and snack breaks if needed.
Whether your baby goes face-first into the cake or just pokes at the frosting with a giggle, their first birthday is a moment worth celebrating and capturing so you can cherish it forever.

YOUR CAKE SMASH SHOOT
When the cake is introduced, the real fun begins! Will your baby be a gentle prodder or will they pulverise it into crumbs?! Once all of the cake has been destroyed, your baby gets to freshen up in a warm bubbly bath with rubber duckies. This makes them nice and clean for the drive home – why not bring them some pyjamas to put on afterwards so they’re ready for a lovely nap?

What happens during this photo session?
I begin the cake smash with the cake safely tucked away, so I can get some photos of your little one looking clean and resplendent. Once I am happy with these “before” pictures, the cake comes out! Some babies seem to know exactly what to do and start smashing the cake, whereas others are a little more cautious and need a bit of encouragement. Most babies get into the swing of things though, and I snap away capturing all their different expressions. Once the cake is a sad mess on the floor, I bring out a lovely warm bubbly bath, complete with rubber duckies, and your baby has fun splashing water everywhere. The advantage of a splash session is your baby goes home nice and clean and saves your car from cake smears! If parents get a bit messy during the shoot, I do offer to hose them down in the garden, but strangely enough, no one has ever taken me up on that offer yet!!!
When should I book my cake smash and splash session?
If you would like to use the photographs as birthday invitations or to announce your little one’s birthday, I recommend you have the session at 11 months old to allow time for editing.
Do you produce the cake?
I can provide a cake for an additional £35. However, I cannot cater for food allergies or dietary requirements. If you decide to bring your own cake, 6-8” works best, and not too tall. A plain vanilla sponge is perfect; I always recommend against chocolate sponge as when it’s all mushed up it can look like your baby has had a nappy incident!
Who decides on the theme of the shoot?
I will liaise with you when you book your photo session to discuss what theme, colours and decorations you would like to have, then we can plan around that. I have a selection of printed backgrounds, but I can also do a more plain background with a balloon arch instead if you prefer.
